BEIJING: No less than 50 million RMB (US$ 7.5 million) in seed business is estimated to have been generated from the 25th Beijing Seed Congress, held 20-23 September at the Oriental MGM hotel in Fengtai District. (Scroll down for full photo gallery)
The event drew a total of 810 Chinese and international seed companies and more than 10,000 guests.
More than 450 new varieties from 50 companies were demonstrated at the plant variety demonstration base in Wangzuo County. Among them were 180 tomato, 70 cucumber, 50 brassica, 50 squash and 100 leafy green cultivars.
The exhibition comprised 530 standard trader booths, 58 premium booths and 330 hotel trading rooms.
APSA members were well represented at the event, with several of them garnering front line exposure by booking premium booths. Namely Beijing Jewelry Seeds Co., Ltd, Beijing ZhongYanYiNong Seedling Co., Ltd., Zhejiang Sky Good Seeds Co., Ltd., Anhui Jianghuai Horticulture Seeds Co., Ltd. and Golden Ma Ma Agricultural Science & Technology Co., Ltd.
Moreover, around 30 APSA members booked hotel meeting rooms to market their seed products to potential clients.
First held in 1992 when only about 100 guests attended, the Beijing Seed Congress has developed to become one of the most important seed trade events in the world’s most populous country.
Co-organized by China National Seed Trade Association, Beijing Seed Association and Beijing Fengtai Seed Association, the theme and objective for this year’s edition was “To build brand exhibition, build communication and service center for the modern seed business ”
In addition to the exhibition and variety demonstration, the event also included a Seed Forum on Sept 20, followed by the official opening ceremony on Sept 21, which was attended by more than 200 guests, including officials from Beijing Municipal Government, representatives from international and domestic seed associations and seed companies.
Speaking at the Seed Forum, the Ministry of Agriculture’s Bureau of Seed Management Variety Management Department Director, Mr. Zhiqiang Ma, updated attendees of the government’s seed industry strategy with his presentation on “The discussions on how to implement Chinese seed industry’s going out under the country’s Silk and Belt strategy”
Also presenting was Mr. Weiwen Wang, CEO of Beijing Aizhong Net, who spoke on the “Exploration and development of Seed+internet” as well as Ms. Yuanyuan Du, Examiner of New Plant Protection Department, Science and Technology Development Center, MOA, who enlightened attendees with her presentation on “Agricultural Plant New Variety Protection and DUS test”
The highlight of the Welcome Banquet on Sep 20 was a signing ceremony for the “Chinese Seed Industry Exhibition Alliance”. The purpose of the Alliance is to foster information and resource sharing, improve cooperation and enhance mutual support between Seed Enterprises and Seed Associations.
